The secret is understanding the value of native pastures and planning for long rest times.

We just posted the Weekly Time News of Anna & Michael Coughlan on how they able to manage 1000’s of hectares and keep their grazing costs to a minimum due to knowing how to manage their cattle and realising the value of native pastures. Here’s Anna with Graeme Hand, CEO Stipa Native Grasses Association at the 7th Stipa conference held in November.

Stipa Conference attendees took time out to visit the Coughlan’s farm as it is a stand out example of good farming.

Anna says that it’s all because of native perennial pastures and strategic grazing that they are now farm stress-free.
When they realised the lack of control and uncertain future that they had when cropping they stopped and turned to cattle.
They learnt that the more paddocks they had allowed longer rest periods and so the more bomb-proof the enterprise becomes.

This clip is just a tiny slice from 3 days of brilliant presenters.
If you like this subscribe to the blog as we will be putting more clips up.

And if you can’t wait for more, purchase the DVD at: www.farmingsecrets.com/fs/store and go to Farming Systems and Management

Tony Evans has continually tested farms with and without compost and the results are convincing! It is obvious why farmers are lining up to join the programme at Camperdown COmpost!

Here’s Hugo Disler of Farming Secrets on site with Tony Evans asking Tony more about the way Camperdown Compost works and of the results that they are seeing.
Tony told Hugo that he has observed one dairy paddock that had used compost for three years and had 87 percent mycorrhizal fungi colonisation on the roots of the pasture. Whereas the one next door, without compost use, had only 9 percent mycorrhizal fungi. This is phenomenal!
He says that replacing fertiliser with compost is generally gradual, with many farmers still choosing to use liquid nitrogen as well as the compost, to give pastures a boost.

To read more go straight to the article from Weekly Times News:
Compost rules in southwest

If you still wish to know more then Farming Secrets has filmed the lot! For as little as $97 you con not only see the results that Camperdown Compost has achieved and learn HOW they did this, you can listen and watch 4 dairy farmers who are over the moon with their results.
Graham and Melissa Clay from Camperdown have been making and applying their own compost for three years. They moved to compost to slash costs and improve the growth of their cheapest source of feed - pasture. Compost has also improved the condition of the cows.
Here is Dr Elaine Ingham in the photo with Tony Evans, Camperdown Compost and Graham Clay, dairy farmer

It is such great news that it has been written about in an article in the Weekly Times News:

Tony Evans, Camperdown Compost is with Dr. Elaine Ingham to visit Graham Clay. Graham joined an onfarm thermal composting programme in 2010.
As more compost is added over the years Elaine says he will use less and less salt based fertilisers.
All the nutrients are present in the soil and are increasingly released as the health returns to the soil food web.
Graham says it is eye-opening to see the clover naturally return and the rye grass disappear.
